We need a car to go shopping and to go to work.
However, there are some countries where international driver’s licenses cannot be used.
Therefore, in order to drive by yourself, you need to go to a driving school and get your license again.
I also went to a driving school in Qatar to get it, but there were many things I didn’t understand, so I had a hard time.
So, I’ve put together the steps, so I’d appreciate it if you could refer to it.
1 Prerequisites
・Have a driver’s license
・It is not expired and has enough time left (at least 3 months or more)
・Your own Qatar ID has been issued (When you move to Qatar, you must apply and issue it. It takes about a month.)
2 General flow until obtaining a license
Qatar ID creation → Embassy letter creation → Driving school application acquisition → Eye test (vision test) → Signal test (written test) → Road test (practical skill test)
3 About how to enroll in a driving school
In Qatar, the embassy must certify that your license is valid before you can enroll in a driving school. Here’s how.
(1) As soon as your Qatar ID is issued, please download the “Certificate of Automobile Driver’s License Excerpt” from the embassy website of each country and fill in the necessary information.
2) Bring the “Certificate of Driving License Excerpt” to the embassy and ask them to write a letter for you. (fee required)
③ As soon as you receive the letter, go to a driving school in Doha and apply. (A “STUDENT ACCESS CARD” will be issued, so please keep it in a safe place.)
4 About the flow of the eye test (eyesight test)
In many cases, you can take an eye test on the day you enter the school, so it is better to take it on that day.
However, if you wear glasses or contacts, don’t forget to bring them!
① Tell the purpose of wanting to take an eye test after acquiring the app. It seems that it may come later.
② Pay the examination fee of 50 QR and take the eye test at the designated place. Wear glasses or contacts if you have them. (Cover one eye with a piece of paper and say 6 numbers or 6 letters)
(3) Take a picture of the retina, and you’re done.
5 About the process of passing the signal test (academic test)
Qatar also has written exams.
Immediately after receiving the application, you will be told to download the application produced by each school.
You can log in to the app by entering the PIN CODE written on the “STUDENT ACCESS CARD”.
① Please study with the videos in the app.
*1 You cannot fast-forward or skip
*2 There are about 20 videos of about 10 minutes (tears)
② After finishing all the videos, please do the practice questions in the app.
*At least 37 correct answers out of 40 are passed.
③ If you pass the practice questions (Practice) three times, you can take the exam (School Theory Exam) in the driving school in the app.
*Similarly, if you answer 37 or more questions out of 40 correctly, you will pass the test.
④After passing the test (School Theory Exam) at the driving school, you will receive a text message on your cell phone a few days later, stating the date and time of the Traffic Department Exam.
⑤ Go to the driving school on the designated date and time and take the signal test.
*1 Take the exam early in the morning (usually meet at 6:30 in the morning. After that, wait for about 2 hours.)
*2 It is only held on weekdays (Sunday-Thursday), so you may need to take a day off.
⑥Since the signal test is a touch panel method, please touch the screen and proceed steadily.
(After 40 questions… if you get “PASS” you will pass, if you get “FAILSE” you will retake the exam at a later date)
⑦If you pass, go to the reception of the driving school as it is. Please consult and decide the schedule of the road test.

5 About the process of passing the road test
Driving license holders will take the road test without practice. In the road test, a police officer becomes an examiner and sits in the passenger seat. In addition, two other examinees will be riding in the back seat, but the order of driving is the order in which they boarded earlier on the day. (The last one is going to be long, so it seems like the first or second person is better…)
You may feel uneasy if you suddenly drive, so please imagine the following at home and practice it before taking the test.
① As a premise before riding
〇In Qatar, driving is left-hand drive and right-hand lane traffic.
〇 The blinker is on the left hand side of the steering wheel. When you raise it, it becomes “→”, and when you lower it, it becomes “←”.
〇 At red lights, temporary stops, left or right turns, and in front of roundabouts, slowly leave a gap between vehicles and stop.
② When you get to the driver’s seat … (* If you forget it, you are out)
〇 Fasten your seat belt.
〇 Move the seat back and forth with the lever under the seat, and adjust the length of the accelerator and the leg to the right place.
〇 Adjust the front and side mirrors.
③ When leaving…
〇 Turn off the hazard lights → Gear to “D” → Release his parking brake → Turn left in order of the turn signal
④While driving…
〇Hold the handle with both hands so that the left and right are symmetrical.
o Follow the instructions of the police. (Instructed by fingers or words. “Over take” is overtaking.)
〇The speed follows the signs on the road. (There are “80km” and “60km”)
〇 Do not cross or step on the line. (Even when turning right, left, or making a U-turn)
〇 When changing lanes, the order is “side mirror confirmation → direction indicator → lane change”
〇Basically, drive in the right lane for 2-lane vehicles and the center lane for 3-lane vehicles. (The far left is the passing lane)
〇In the case of left turns and U-turns, the direction indicator remains on even after changing lanes or while stopped at a signal.
⑤At the roundabout…
The roundabout has four exits in total. The ( ) makes the police say Exit in words.
・EXIT 1 → When exiting from the direction of entry to the right (Right)
・EXIT2 → When you exit straight from the direction you enter (Straight)
・EXIT3 → When exiting to the left from the direction of entry (Left)
・EXIT 4 → When making a U-turn in the direction of entering (U-turn)
〇 Roughly roundabouts are conducted in exams.
〇 The police will give instructions with fingers or words.
〇 The point is “timing to put out the turn signal” and “lane to enter”!
・Exit 1 → Move to the rightmost lane and turn on the turn signal at the signboard 100m ahead (leave it on). Slow down before the entrance, see the timing, enter the outermost lane of the roundabout, and turn right. Get into the right lane.
・EXIT2→The direction indicator does not appear. Slow down just before the entrance and get into the center lane (if not, the outside lane) of the roundabout at the right time. After passing EXIT1, turn on the turn signal “→” and exit into the left lane of EXIT2. After exiting, change lanes to the right lane.
・Exit 3 → Move to the leftmost lane and turn on the direction indicator at the signboard 300m ahead (leave it out). Slow down just before the entrance and enter the innermost lane of the roundabout at the right time. After passing EXIT2, turn on the turn signal “→” and exit to the left lane of EXIT3. After exiting, change lanes to the right lane.
・Exit 4 → Move to the leftmost lane and turn on the direction indicator at the signboard 300m ahead (leave it on). Slow down just before the entrance and enter the innermost lane of the roundabout at the right time. After passing EXIT3, turn on the turn signal “→” and exit to the left lane of EXIT4. After exiting, change lanes to the right lane.
⑥ When stopping…
〇 Turn indicator to the right → Stop → Pull the parking brake → Gear to P → Hazard lamp lights up
*1 If the bus stops near the stop, you are out. Park away from the bus stop.
*2 You are out if you cross the stop line. Stay focused until the end.
After the road test, wait at the driving school.
A text message will be sent to your mobile phone stating your pass/fail.
If you pass, go to the license issuing office and have your license issued. (fee is 250QAR)
If you fail, you will be challenged again at a later date.
